English - Inclusive Practice

Inclusive practice in English focuses on clarity, structure, and confidence in reading, writing, and spoken language. Lessons are carefully planned so students understand expectations and are supported through modelling, narration, and guided practice.

Examples of Adapt in Practice in English Lessons:

· Frequent checks for understanding through questioning, mini whiteboards, and short tasks.

· Thoughtful seating arrangements to support focus, confidence, and access to support.

· Clear modelling of reading and writing so students understand what successful work looks like.

· Examples broken into manageable steps, with teachers narrating expectations and thought processes.

· Explicit teaching and revisiting of vocabulary, sentence structures, and writing techniques.

· Regular teacher check-ins during independent work to support progress and independence.

Building Literacy Knowledge

At Holsworthy Community College, literacy is developed through a whole-school approach where reading, vocabulary and communication are embedded across the curriculum.

• A literature-rich English curriculum develops reading, writing, vocabulary and critical thinking skills.
• The Literary Canon provides structured tutor time reading sessions twice each week, exposing students to high-quality texts and important themes.
• Reciprocal reading strategies (Summarise, Clarify, Question, Predict) develop comprehension and discussion skills.
• Subject-specific vocabulary is explicitly taught using strategies such as "I Say, You Say" and revisited regularly – using a choral response to ensure clear pronunciation.
• Reading and extended text opportunities are built into subject curricula across the school.
• Students are expected to use taught keywords accurately within their spoken and written responses.
• Students are encouraged to identify and celebrate successful use of subject-specific vocabulary during reflection activities and feedback opportunities.

Students are identified through reading age assessments, CAT scores, teacher referrals and assessment data and may access:

• Lexia literacy intervention.
• Reading comprehension intervention.
• Phonics intervention for students requiring support with decoding and reading fluency.
• Small-group literacy support.
• Adapted literacy-focused homework.
• Handwriting intervention.
• Touch-typing intervention where handwriting remains a significant barrier to learning and examination access.
