Head of School Welcome
Holsworthy Community College
‘Inspiring us to be the best that we can be!’
Welcome! Thank you for taking an interest in our school. We are a small, rural secondary school in North Devon, in the market town of Holsworthy. We have many strengths: our family feel, excellent pastoral support, strong and passionate teachers as well as great students, who are our best advocates and assets! We are proud to be part of the Holsworthy Area Cluster, which includes Holsworthy Community College, Bridgerule, Bradford and Black Torrington Primary schools. We are delighted to be part of the Dartmoor Multi Academy Trust. This will allow us to build strong links with Okehampton College and Tavistock College and our ten primary schools, as well as allow us to work more closely with the Dartmoor Teaching School Alliance. We are also fortunate to share best practice with Great Torrington School.
We are the size of a four form entry school, but for some subjects and groups we stretch to five classes. Our site includes specialist and impressive twenty first century technology rooms and Science laboratories as well as good sized classrooms and a canteen which receives 100% positive feedback from all that use it. You can order and pay for food via our School Comms system which means that we can operate a cashless system.
Our staff are fantastic! I am fortunate to lead a dedicated, caring and knowledgeable team, who will care for and inspire your child. We all value education and want to help your child become the best that they can be. My Leadership Team support, develop and lead our teaching staff and support staff. Our Heads of Faculty, are the driving force of learning and our Heads of Key Stage and Heads of House are the pillars of support for your child both pastorally and academically. We operate a vertical mentoring system which is part of our House structure. Teachers are helped by our wonderful support staff. Students with additional needs are assisted by our SENCo and team of teaching assistants who offer a range of interventions to enable our students to succeed. Our Governing Body are a knowledgeable, committed and driven group who meet most weeks to discuss and evaluate our Federation’s needs and progress.
Our results are a cumulative effort of five years of hard work, building upon the education that our primary feeder schools provide. In 2017 over 78% of our students received a pass 9-4 at GCSE English and 70% gained a pass 9-4 in GCSE Maths, with 63% of our students gaining the 9-4 pass in both of these subjects. Our most able students are stretched, evidenced by three students gaining the coveted GCSE 9s in Maths and two students gaining this highest of grades in English Language. Science is always a strength at HCC and 100% of students taking Triple Science gained A*-C, with an impressive 58% achieving an A/A* in Physics giving an indication of the quality. 85% A*-C for one GCSE and 78% A*-C for two GCSEs; over 85 A* and A grades were achieved by our students in Science in 2017. Over 83% of students gained GCSE French A*-C, with 76% of students gaining A*-C in GCSE German.
Humanities is an area where our Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural awareness is always developing and this can be demonstrated through the many residential experiences that are offered to our students. These have included trips to Poland and the concentration camps, London to study the Crime and Punishment unit with visits to the Tower of London as well as the annual excursion to the Belgium battlefields. We also carry out many day visits to sites of local interest including trips to Dartmoor, Geographical surveys on our beaches, as well as opportunities to visit theatres, museums and national attractions such as Plymouth National Aquarium. A number of these opportunities take place during our four Collapsed Curriculum days, when we cease the regular timetable and provide extra-curricular activities for all of our students.
Physical Education is a huge part of life at HCC and it is fantastic when our small college competes against much larger schools and win! This was epitomized with last years’ Year 11 Football team who won the County Cup and got to the semi-final of the national Small Schools Cup. Each week, our students are given opportunities to compete and perform in a variety of sports and practices take place both during lunchtimes and after school during our busy schedule.
In order to see the breadth and depth of life at Holsworthy Community College, I urge you to read our weekly newsletter called ‘View from the Bridge’ which contains information about our working week and can be found on our website. You will also see examples of the outstanding art work that our students produce, both here and all around our school site.
Thank you for taking the time to read this information, if you would like further guidance to be provided, outside of our prospectus, please do not hesitate to contact us.
